Therapeutic observations support that B cells may both directly and indirectly contribute to the development of MS. Removal of immunoglobulins from the peripheral blood by plasmapheresis appears to be beneficial in the subgroup of patients with type II lesions59 and depletion of CD20 B cells by rituximab results in a significant reduction in the number of enhancing MRI lesions.
